Twins

Twins

Update 5-21-09

bullet

I went through all the birth records I could read at the library. I found no mention of twins for Emeline and John Quincy Hall. However, they had a son named John L Hall born July 4, 1894. I also looked through death records to see if any children had died in that time frame. I found a record for an Unnamed Hall boy, died July 4, 1894 during childbirth. His parents were listed as John and Susan Hall of Burke Station. I'm curious if the death index is incorrect and it's not Susan Hall but Emeline. There is no Susan Hall listed in the 1900 Fairfax census.

I'm going to try to get to the court house to look at the original death register. So far, this is my best lead. It would explain why there are no twins listed in their household in any census, and it also accounts for the 3rd dead child (Emeline had 12 children, 3 of which died by 1900. That would be Jane, Effie and an unknown 3rd child).

Notes from the article

bullet

Eldridge Taylor's grandmother was a twin

bullet

Mary Sutherland (married James Taylor) and her twin sister was Martha Sutherland (married Charles Harrison). Both of these women are my great great grandmothers.

bullet

Eldridge Taylor has twin sisters

bullet

Still unknown who the twins may be

bullet

Mary Williams, born in 1903

bullet

Bessie Sutherland, born in 1908

bullet

Matilda Sutherland, born in 1910

bullet

Virginia Gertrude Sutherland, born in 1914 died in 1915

bullet

Ellen Sutherland born in 1919 died in 1925

bullet

This articles says that Eldridge "has" twin sisters, so I'm assuming they are still alive in 1937.

bullet

Ada Hall Taylor's grandmother had twin sons

bullet

Grandmother on her father's side is Emeline Hall, married to John Q. Hall. As of the 1900 census, children were:

bullet

Quincy, May 1879

bullet

John L, July 1894

bullet

Caleb W, Jan 1892

bullet

Milton D, July 1888

bullet

Archie A, June 1886

bullet

Maggie, June 1876 according to census. Her birth record says Jay 19, 1875. I can tell if it's supposed to be January or July

bullet

Ada, 1877

bullet

Dora V, July 1881

bullet

Annie E, May 1890

In the 1900 census, Emeline is listed as having 12 children but only 9 still surviving. Since the 1890 census was destroyed, any children born and died between 1880 and 1900 would not be listed. I'm curious if the twin sons, if they existed, were born during that period.

bullet

Grandmother on her mother's side is Elizabeth Beach Ludlow (daughter of Diana Hall). She died in 1887. Her children were:

bullet

James, 1870

bullet

Augustus, 1882

bullet

Grover Cleveland, 1884

bullet

Bennie, 1874

bullet

Charlotte, 1873

bullet

Permelia, 1876

Again, we have the issue of the 1890 census. The birth dates of her children are pretty packed in there up until her death, so I only see a few years' window for having twins, perhaps between 1884 and 1887.

I'm leaning towards the idea that Emeline was the mother of twins rather than Elizabeth. Further research into birth and death records may shed some light on this. I will keep you informed.
