Unraveling the
family of Lewis Q. Hall
Lewis Q. Hall was murdered in 1855 by William
Keene. Since he died just a few years after records were kept (full census,
marriage, birth) it's very difficult to figure out exactly who his family
members were. All I really have is his son who was listed in the will
of William Hall.
Some info:

William Hall Jr., died 1868, left property to
"my great grandson John Hall, son of Lewis Q. Hall." That implies
that Lewis was the son of one of William's children. But which one? And was
that child deceased in 1868, as was Lewis, therefore the property fell to
the great grandson? |

The marriage license of Archie Hall to Amanda
Dodson lists Archie's parents as Lewis Q. and Elizabeth Hall. Archie was 25
in 1866, so he was born in 1841. There is an Archie Hall in the 1850 census,
9 years old, living in the household of Thomas Hall. There is also a 27 year
old Elizabeth Hall in that household. I believe this is the correct Archie
and Elizabeth. But who is Thomas Hall? Is he the son of William? If so, why
would he not be listed in the will? Or is he Elizabeth's father? Plus, why
wasn't Archie given property in William's will? Was Archie deceased by 1868?

In 1850, listed under Elizabeth Hall is Bitha
Hall, 22 (which is too old to be Elizabeth's child), John, 14 (who I
thought at first was listed in
William's will, but this John is too old. The other John isn't born
until 1854), Martha Hall, 11, Archie Hall, 9 (Elizabeth's son),
Thomas, 6, and Frances, 1. Are these last 5 children listed Lewis Q. and
Elizabeth Hall's children? If so, why are none of them, other than John,
given property in William's will? I'm curious if the females were left
out due to marriage and if the others are still living in 1868. I'll
have to investigate further. |

In 1860, there is a listing for Thomas
Hall, 72, Ann, 50, Archibald, 20, John, 25, Elizabeth, 25, Elihue, 5,
Peter, 3, and a baby, 2 months. Elizabeth—John and Archibald's mother—is
not listed. Perhaps she's dead by 1860. The other Elizabeth is listed as
married, so I assume she's married to John because Archibald married
Amanda Dodson in 1866. I'll have to see if I can find a marriage license
for them. |
