Or should I just
rename this page: Tidbits that don't really fit anywhere else?

Effie Taylor: I was looking through
the birth register today for twin births in our family. During my search I
saw Effie in there. Twice.
 |
The first listing was Effie M. Taylor, born
February 2, 1883, child of James and Mary Taylor |
 |
The second listing was Effie Taylor, born
April 24, 1888, child of James and Mary Taylor. |
 |
Then her tombstone has her birth date as
February 12, 1884. |
 |
Effie's brother William's birth date is
February 2, 1882 |
I have no idea how all of these dates got so
jumbled up but it might explain why Alice Taylor is listed as dead around
188X when in reality, she lived until 1963. Whoever was in charge of the
register didn't know what they were doing. |
 |
Joseph Sutherland: I've been wondering
what happened to Joseph Sutherland. He married Alice Taylor, then filed for
divorce but never actually divorced her. I haven't been able to find him in
the 1930 census. I thought maybe he was dead or had moved away. Turns out,
the census form has his last name down wrong. How do I know? Interesting
story.
I was looking through the death index from Fairfax County for 1912-1917.
There is a listing for a (boy) English, father John English mother
Sutherland. Which Sutherland? So I looked up John English in the 1920 census
and his wife is Aletha. Ok, good breakthrough! Then I looked up the 1930
census. John English has two brothers in law living with him: Joe Southern
and Earnest Southern, and his mother in law, Rose Southern. So think about a
country accent saying the word "Southerland." Put a nice drawl on it. It
almost sounds like Southern doesn't it? The census taker took down the name
wrong.
So now I know what happened to Joseph! But why is he not living with Alice?
They don't seem to have the best of relationships at this point. Maybe the
1940 census will shed some light on the situation. |

Info on Isaac Hall:
 |
William Hall who died in 1832, had 4
deceased sons by the time he died: Jacob, Presley, John, and Isaac.
Isaac and Jacob had heirs, according to William's will. |
 |
Isaac Hall, son of William Hall, died in
1897 |
 |
Isaac Hall died in 1855 in DC |
 |
Isaac Hall had a child, Eilbeck, with Silena
Hall |
 |
Isaac Hall married Alcinda Arrington in DC
in 1853 |
 |
Isaac Hall, 21, married Sarah Sisson, 22, in
1880. He is the child of Isaac and Alcinda. |
 |
Isaac Hall married Frances Davis in 1838 in
Alexandria |
 |
Isaac Hall, 35, married India Rolls, 18, in
1871. He is the child of Isaac and Frances. |
 |
Isaac Hall was the executor of Cassandra
Hall's will. She was the daughter of William Sr. Isaac is listed as her
nephew. |
 |
According to the 1850 census, there are
several Isaac Halls in the DC/Virginia area
 |
Isaac, Fairfax, born 1812 |
 |
Isaac, Alexandria, born 1802 |
 |
Isaac, DC, born 1819 |
|
We now have an Isaac born in 1802, 1812,
1819, 1836, and 1859. And we have one who died before 1831, one in 1855, and
one in 1897.
So, who are all these Isaac Halls? Obviously,
they aren't the same person. And what are their relationships to each other
and to the core William Hall family? We know that Silena Hall is William
Sr's child. So is Isaac. Obviously, brother and sister did not have the
child Eilbeck. Silena must have married a different Isaac. So who was he?
Possibly an heir of Jacob or Isaac (both deceased before 1831)? Or a
completely separate Isaac Hall? Also, Isaac Hall was the executor of
Cassandra Hall's will. He is her nephew. So, he's either the son of William
Jr., or perhaps a child of one of her other siblings? |

In case you didn't know, the state of
Virginia is putting all their chancery files online. I've been going through
Fairfax but they're still working on them. Last time I checked, they were
still working before 1880 or so. I just checked last night and now they're
up to 1898. Here's a link if you need it:

Edith Sprouse has a set of books in the
Virginia Room of the Fairfax library. These books have a ton of information
in them that is extremely valuable. However, I found a mistake in a will
that is significant to the Hall/Taylor family.
Sprouse writes in the Isaac Hall will that he leave land to James Taylor
"the boy that I have raised." However, upon reading Isaac's will, that is
not what he said. The exact text is:
"I also give and devise to James Edd Taylor Senior, in trust for the use
and benefit of James Hall Junior (the boy that I have raised) in fee simple,
the portion of the Compton tract of land devised to me by my father, and
described in his will..."
It also mentions that James Hall is not of age as of November 27, 1887.
I checked the 1880 census, and James Hall is listed as 14 living with Isaac
Hall. The only James Hall I have in my family is the one that married
Rosanna Harrison in 1895. He was 28, which would make him around 14 in 1880.
I believe these two may be the same James Hall. |

Possible breakthrough on parents of Charles
Harrison. In the will of Joseph Simpson, he leaves property to his children:
Sarah, who intermarried with Manly Harrison (Charles' parents were Sarah and
Emanuel Harrison. Manly is a nickname for Emanuel), Susan who intermarried
with William Taylor, Joseph, and James.
Perhaps Sarah Simpson and Manly Harrison are Charles' parents. I need to
investigate further. |

In the case of Mary F. Williamson vs. Isaac
Hall and James E. Taylor, there is a reference to William Elback Hall. This
is the first time I have seen his full name as William rather than just Eilbeck Hall or Elback Hall. I found the same name in another case. Also in
this case, there is a note that Mary Williamson has married Peter Hall in
1892. |
